George Grosz

George Grosz (1893-1959) was a German artist known for his caricatures of life in 1920’s Berlin. A member of the Dada and New Objectivity groups, he usually drew in pen and ink and occasionally in watercolor. Grosz was also a vociferous opponent of the Nazi Party. In 1933 he fled Germany due to this opposition, emigrating to the United States.
Grosz created erotica throughout his life. Early in his career, he showed sexual activity in the same grotesque fashion as he depicted everyday life. After his move to the U.S., he produced more conventional nudes.
George Grosz’s drawings are brilliant and striking. Very forceful.
